Dhoni can play IPL for 5 more years, says Irfan Pathan

As the curtains draw on the league stage of IPL 2023, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves in a must-win situation in their final match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Securing a victory is of paramount importance for CSK as it will secure their spot in the playoffs and potentially secure a top-two finish. Moreover, with murmurs circulating about this potentially being MS Dhoni’s last season in the Indian Premier League, fans have rallied in large numbers to support the iconic captain and his team.

Speculations surrounding the retirement of the seasoned wicketkeeper gained further momentum when the entire CSK squad took a lap of honor after their last home game, expressing gratitude to the fans for their unwavering faith and support.

However, it is important to note that Dhoni himself has not made any official announcements or indications regarding retirement. Nonetheless, fans have been engaging in speculative discussions given Dhoni’s tendency to make unexpected decisions in his cricketing career. Shedding light on this matter, former India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan shared a unique perspective on Dhoni’s potential continuation in the game.

Pathan believes that with the introduction of the Impact Player rule, the 41-year-old stalwart can extend his playing career for another five years.

“In my opinion, Dhoni can continue playing for another five years due to the new Impact Player rule. It is others who have been discussing his retirement; he himself has remained silent on the matter. He still possesses ample cricketing prowess and has showcased his commitment by hitting towering sixes in the IPL, even while battling knee pain. This demonstrates his unwavering dedication to the sport,” expressed Pathan in an interview with ESPNCricinfo.

Currently occupying the second spot on the points table with 15 points from 13 matches, CSK, led by Dhoni, is eager to face DC, who currently sit at ninth place. CSK aims for a comprehensive victory to secure a top-two finish, granting them the opportunity to play Qualifier 1 against the Gujarat Titans.

In this high-stakes match, CSK’s faithful fans stand united, fervently backing MS Dhoni and the team as they strive to achieve their objectives on the IPL stage.
