In a setback for Sri Lanka, Patthum Nissanka is likely to miss the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe after being ruled out of the ODIs due to a suspected case of dengue. Nissanka, who has already been sidelined from the ODIs, faces uncertainty regarding his participation in the T20Is if the dengue diagnosis is confirmed. The cricketer is currently undergoing treatment and has been admitted to the hospital.

The T20Is are scheduled to take place following the ODIs, and the absence of Nissanka is seen as a significant blow to the Sri Lankan squad. In 49 ODIs, Nissanka has amassed 1728 runs with an impressive average of 38.40. His stellar performance in 2023 includes 29 ODIs, where he scored 1151 runs. Notably, against Zimbabwe, Nissanka has a formidable record, accumulating 417 runs from eight games, with a high score of 104.

In light of Nissanka’s probable absence, 19-year-old Shevon Daniel has been named as the replacement. Despite having limited exposure to ODIs, with no prior appearances in the format, Daniel has featured in one T20I. Although primarily an opener, Daniel’s role in the opening position for the upcoming ODIs is uncertain, given Sri Lanka’s existing opening options. Whether or not he will play in the first ODI remains to be seen.

The young cricketer faces the challenge of filling the shoes of Nissanka, a key player for Sri Lanka. With the team heavily relying on Nissanka’s consistent performances, his absence creates a void that the young replacement, Shevon Daniel, will aim to fill in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe.
