Pitches or Roads

Two Test matches of Pakistan versus Australia of the Benaud Qadir Trophy are concluded and we have seen a runs feast in both the tests, first being held at Rawalpindi and second at Karachi.

In the first test Pakistan in its two innings scored 728 runs at the loss of just 4 wickets. Australia also scored 459 runs in the first innings of the Pindi test. The story was not different in Karachi except for one innings where Pakistan got bundled out for just 148 courtesy of Mitchel Starc and Patrick Cummins’s reverse swinging deliveries. The pitch of the Karachi test was better because it provided a great fight and classic level of test cricket to viewers but still you cannot call it the best because the best pitch is that which has assistance for both batters and bowlers.

So what type of pitches do we need to have to take full advantage of home conditions? If we try to summarize it in a few words it would be the pitches we prepared for the Pakistan versus South Africa series 2021 where both batters and bowlers were able to showcase their skills. In that series, we had seen just one 300+ score. In that series, we had seen seam and spin dominating in the form of Hasan Ali and Keshav Maharaj respectively. We had also seen Aiden Markram, Fawad Alam and Muhammad Rizwan scoring hundreds.

If we conclude, the pitches must provide equal assistance to both batters and bowlers so viewers can have some quality cricket to watch. The pitches must not be like roads as we had in Pindi Cricket Stadium or like a graveyard like we usually see in India. In simple words, modesty is all you need and you need to back your players rather than fear the opposition’s strengths.
