Joe Burns, the former Australia batter, has been named Italy’s new captain, marking a significant chapter in his cricketing journey. Burns, who switched allegiances to Italy earlier this year through his mother’s Italian heritage, expressed pride in taking on the leadership role. “It feels like a homecoming,” Burns said. “Representing Italy is a privilege, and I’m eager to lead the team to new heights.”

The naming of Italy’s new captain follows Burns’s debut for the national side back in June. Since then, he has enjoyed outstanding form in international cricket. He has plundered 211 runs from five T20Is, at a high average of 70.33, with his sparkling unbeaten 108 from 55 balls against Romania at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Europe Qualifier being his best in that period.

Italian Cricket Federation president Fabio Marabini backed Burns for the leadership role. “Joe has brought professionalism and experience to the team from day one,” Marabini said. “His appointment as Italy’s new captain is in line with our vision to lift Italian cricket on the international stage. We are counting on his leadership as we aim for the 2026 T20 World Cup qualifiers.”

Burns’ leadership role also comes with growing recognition in franchise cricket. Recently signed by Dubai Capitals for the UAE’s ILT20, he continues to attract attention from top leagues, having previously played in the Vitality Blast and Big Bash League. The transition he has made from a former Australian Test opener, where he scored over 1,400 runs across 23 matches, to Italy’s new captain is a great example of his adaptability and dedication to the game.

This change in leadership heralds a bright future for Italian cricket, as Burns will captain a very talented squad. His teammate Thomas Draca also drew attention when he featured in the IPL’s long list for the 2025 auction, further putting Italy in the spotlight as regards world cricket. As Italy’s new captain, Burns is hoping to inspire a new era of success.
