Texas Super Kings Pull Off Last-Ball Victory Over MI New York in MLC Opener
In a pulsating contest that swung wildly until the final ball, the Texas Super Kings kicked off their MLC 2025 campaign with a thrilling 3-run win over MI New York at the Oakland Coliseum. It was a night where grit, composure, and moments of brilliance made all the difference.
Despite a rocky start, the Super Kings posted a defendable total of 185/6, anchored by a gritty 66 from Devon Conway and an unbeaten 53 from Calvin Savage. Their partnership of 79 runs off 47 balls changed the momentum of the innings, turning what looked like a sub-par score into a competitive one.
Conway and Savage Save the Day
The innings had started poorly for Texas, with the top-order collapsing to 97/5 by the 12th over. But Conway’s calm under pressure and Savage’s late acceleration, including four towering sixes, gave their side a crucial lifeline. Their understanding at the crease and precise shot selection helped the Super Kings recover just in time.
MI New York Falter in a Spirited Chase
MI New York, led by Nicholas Pooran, began the chase on shaky ground, losing both openers early. Pooran’s own dismissal for 6, caught by Daryl Mitchell off Noor Ahmad, left his side in deep trouble at 21/3.
But Michael Bracewell and Monank Patel mounted a fierce counterpunch, stitching a 97-run stand that reignited hopes for the defending champions. Just as the tide seemed to turn, Adam Milne struck—thanks to a spectacular diving catch by Faf du Plessis, dismissing Bracewell and flipping the game back in Texas’s favor.
Mitchell’s Magic in the Field
With 64 needed from 40, Kieron Pollard entered and immediately looked dangerous, smashing 18 runs off four balls. But a moment of brilliance from Daryl Mitchell, who ran him out after a lapse in awareness, proved to be the turning point.
Mitchell wasn’t done—on the very next ball, he executed another run-out, this time of the set Monank Patel, halting MI New York’s momentum completely.
Despite a brave final push from Tajinder Singh, the chase ended just short, as Mitchell defended nine runs in the final over, sealing a dramatic finish.
Savage Earns Deserved Accolade
For his all-round heroics, Calvin Savage was named Player of the Match, capping off a thrilling night that showcased the competitive spirit and high drama MLC has to offer.
Up next, the Texas Super Kings face the Los Angeles Knight Riders, while MI New York prepare for a high-stakes clash with the San Francisco Unicorns in Sunday’s double-header.
