Shakib Al Hasan Inspires Dubai Capitals to Opening Win in Global Super League 2025
The 2025 Global Super League (GSL) got off to a thrilling start at the Guyana National Stadium as Dubai Capitals outclassed New Zealand’s Central Stags by 22 runs in the tournament opener.
It was a match defined by the brilliance of Shakib Al Hasan, who delivered a commanding Player of the Match performance. The veteran all-rounder crafted a crucial 58 not out off 37 balls before dismantling the Stags’ batting order with 4 wickets for just 13 runs, sealing a confident win for the Capitals.
Dubai Capitals Set a Competitive Total
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, the Capitals built a solid foundation thanks to a fiery 41 from Sediqullah Atal, who attacked early with seven boundaries. The innings gained further momentum as Shakib took charge in the middle and death overs. His innings featured seven fours and a towering six — the first maximum of the tournament.
Despite some resistance from the Stags’ bowlers, especially Angus Schaw, who took 3/25, Dubai posted a competitive 165/7 in 20 overs.
Central Stags Falter in the Chase
Chasing 166, the Central Stags never quite got ahead of the game. Their innings lacked momentum as Dubai’s bowlers kept things tight, particularly during the middle overs. Captain Tom Bruce battled hard for 34 off 39 balls, but his dismissal in the penultimate over all but sealed the Stags’ fate.
In a tense final over, Khuzaima Tanveer threatened to grab the headlines with two wickets in two balls, only to be denied a hat-trick by Ajaz Patel, who managed to carve out a boundary. Yet, with 29 needed off the final six deliveries, it was too steep a climb, and the Stags eventually closed on 143/8.
A Strong Statement by Dubai
This win not only gives Dubai Capitals a flying start in GSL 2025 but also serves as a strong statement of intent. With Shakib’s veteran presence, Atal’s aggressive intent, and a disciplined bowling unit, the Capitals have immediately positioned themselves as early tournament contenders.
