In a statement that has sent waves around cricketing circles, South African cricket legend AB de Villiers returns to cricket after a four-year break, excitement that fans had seen wind down for millions. The iconic batsman leads Game Changers South Africa Champions as the second edition of the World Championship of Legends is set to take center stage, a premium T20 league featuring retired and non-contracted cricketing greats.
AB De Villiers opens up as he returns to cricket
Speaking about his decision, de Villiers shared, “Four years ago, I stepped away from cricket because the passion had faded. But playing in the garden with my young sons sparked a flame I thought was gone. I’m back in the gym, back in the nets, and ready for WCL in July.“
The return of AB de Villiers to cricket is not only a boost for the Game Changers but also a monumental moment for the WCL. The team, which had included Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, and Herschelle Gibbs in the past, will now enjoy the fearless leadership and unmatched versatility of de Villiers.
Co-owners Amandeep and Harry Singh welcomed de Villiers: “It’s a historic moment for the league and an inspiration both for fans and players. It’s emotional when cricketing heroes come onto the field again.” WCL CEO Harshit Tomar admired that this was a tribute to cricket’s golden era.
