The third edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 will commence in February and will feature Baroda and Lucknow as strong venues contenders to host the event. As per sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling over the idea of having a two-phase format for the 23-match season with Baroda being probable for hosting the final phase along with the championship match.
WPL 2025 Venues: Focus on Baroda’s New Stadium
The BCCI has not made any formal announcement of the schedule and venues to the five franchises of the league. The association has been having informal talks with the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) and the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA). Formal announcements are awaited.
Recently opened Kotambi Stadium, in Baroda, has already been competing to host the final phase of the WPL. This venue, being of international standard, has already been used to host some key matches like Women’s ODIs against West Indies and senior Women’s T20 games. The BCA will prepare it for WPL by holding the knockout stages of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy under lights at the stadium.
The WPL is likely to begin on February 6 or 7 and end on March 8 or 9-International Women’s Day. The later stages would be keenly hosted by Baroda since the team would have more time to prepare in the newly constructed stadium. The first phase of the tournament may be played at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium.
The entire inaugural WPL season was hosted in Mumbai while Bengaluru and Delhi shared the second season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru is going to try and retain its defending title in the coming tournament.
Meanwhile, it is reported that India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, rested for the Ireland ODI series, is called to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru; the reason was not stated yet, but most believed it’s because of injury.
