English cricket has been plunged into mourning following the tragic passing of Worcestershire left-arm spinner Josh Baker at the age of just 20.
Baker, who signed his first professional contract with Worcestershire at the tender age of 17, had already carved a promising path in the sport. He claimed 43 wickets in 22 first-class matches and 27 in white-ball cricket, showcasing his potential as a spin bowler.
His talent extended beyond bowling, as he was also an emerging allrounder, scoring two half-centuries, including a career-best 75 against Gloucestershire in July 2023.
Born in Redditch and educated at Malvern College, Baker rose through the ranks at Worcestershire’s New Road ground, even representing England at the under-19 level. His dedication to the sport was further solidified last season when he signed a new three-year deal with the club and even spent the winter honing his skills in Sydney grade cricket.
The news of Baker’s passing came just after a strong performance in a 2nd XI Championship match against Somerset, where he took 3 for 66.
The Worcestershire County Cricket Club released a statement expressing their profound grief and highlighting the immense loss Baker’s passing represents.
“The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated,” said Ashley Giles, Worcestershire’s chief executive. “Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family. We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends.”
Baker’s most notable on-field moment came in May 2022 when he faced the legendary Ben Stokes, who famously smashed 161 runs off his over in a T20 match. Despite the onslaught, Stokes recognized Baker’s talent and later messaged him with words of encouragement.
“You’ve got serious potential and [I] think you’ll go a long way,” Stokes wrote. “Most important opinion is from the lads in your changing-room and they will always have your back. This coming from someone who got meeeeeeeelted in a T20 World Cup final.”
Beyond his cricketing ability, Baker’s infectious enthusiasm and vibrant spirit were cherished by his teammates and the wider cricketing community.
“More than his skills as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met,” Worcestershire stated in their tribute. “His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team.”
Plans to pay tribute to Baker will be made in close consultation with his family, ensuring a fitting farewell that reflects the remarkable young man he was.
The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) also expressed their deep sorrow at Baker’s passing.
“Everybody at the PCA is heartbroken to hear of Josh’s passing and we offer our sincere condolences to all his family, friends and teammates,” said Rob Lynch, the PCA’s chief executive. “Josh was a cricketer with his full career and life ahead of him and this news is impossible to comprehend.”
The PCA and the Professional Cricketers’ Trust are actively working to support Baker’s family, teammates, and all those affected by this tragedy.
Josh Baker’s sudden passing leaves a void not only within Worcestershire but across the entire cricketing community. His talent, spirit, and dedication will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Josh.
