Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim has made a dramatic U-turn, announcing his return from international retirement to spearhead the national team in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Wasim’s decision comes after a stellar performance in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024.

Last November, Wasim opted to step away from international cricket citing frustration with the then-PCB management and captain Babar Azam. He felt his consistent performances were overlooked for selection. However, a change in leadership at the PCB and captaincy has paved the way for Wasim’s return.

Babar Azam, who captained Pakistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup, reportedly faced the axe after the tournament. The mantle has now been passed on to young pace sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi in the shortest format. Shaheen’s leadership debut wasn’t ideal, with a 4-1 series loss to New Zealand in T20Is and a disappointing PSL 2024 campaign with Lahore Qalandars.

In stark contrast to Shaheen’s struggles, Wasim’s stint with Islamabad United in the PSL was a triumphant one. Islamabad, led by Shadab Khan, emerged as champions, and Wasim etched his name in PSL history. He became the first player ever to win Player of the Match awards in all playoff matches, culminating in a phenomenal five-wicket haul in the final against Multan Sultans. His overall economical bowling and crucial wicket-taking throughout the playoffs were instrumental in Islamabad United’s victory.

Wasim’s impressive form undoubtedly caught the eye of the new PCB management, prompting them to reach out and convince him to return. Taking to Twitter, Wasim announced his decision, stating:

“I am happy to announce that pursuant to meeting PCB officials, I have reconsidered my retirement and am delighted to declare my availability for Pakistan cricket in T20i format leading up to ICC T20i World Cup 2024. I would like to thank the PCB for reposing trust in me and I would give my very best to bring laurels to my country. Pakistan comes first!”

Wasim’s return bolsters Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign. His experience and recent form under pressure situations will be invaluable assets for the team. The fans will be eagerly waiting to see how Wasim integrates into the new-look Pakistan squad under Shaheen’s leadership as they strive for glory at the T20 World Cup.
