MS Dhoni’s journey to officially own his iconic nickname has reached a major milestone. The phrase ‘Captain Cool’, long synonymous with Dhoni’s composed presence on the cricket field, is now on track to become a legally registered trademark under his name. The Captain Cool trademark MS Dhoni applied for has been accepted and published by India’s Trademark Registry.
Filed in June 2023, the trademark request covers areas such as sports coaching, training services, and the provision of sports facilities. If no objections are raised within 120 days from its acceptance (June 16, 2025), Dhoni will gain exclusive rights to the nickname that has defined his cricketing persona for over a decade.
Dhoni Finally Owns Captain Cool Trademark After 2-Year Battle
Dhoni’s application faced a hurdle when the Registry pointed out that a firm, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt. Ltd., already held the trademark. Dhoni responded with a rectification petition, alleging bad faith and intent to mislead the public by leveraging his popularity. After four rounds of hearings, the Captain Cool trademark MS Dhoni case was finally accepted.
In his petition, Dhoni stated that the previous registration was “a case of bad faith… aimed at unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual.”
On the cricketing front, Dhoni made headlines this IPL season when he resumed Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy midway through the campaign after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury. However, CSK had a season to forget, finishing at the bottom of the IPL table for the first time in 16 years.
Despite the rough season, Dhoni was honoured globally earlier this month with his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame, a recognition of his legacy in world cricket. As he turns 44 this July, fans are still holding out hope for one more IPL season from the legendary captain.
