The Paarl Royals continued their dominance at Boland Park, securing their third consecutive victory in the SA20 season with a six-wicket win over the Joburg Super Kings. The Royals’ spinners, led by Bjorn Fortuin, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, Joe Root, and Dunith Wellalage, restricted the Super Kings to a modest 146/6, propelling the Royals to the top of the standings.
Royals’ Spin Quartet Stifles Super Kings
Bjorn Fortuin (2/22) set the tone early, taking two key wickets in the Powerplay, putting the Super Kings on the back foot. Mujeeb-ur-Rahman (1/28) and the rest of the spin attack followed suit, effectively stifling the visitors’ scoring opportunities.
Royals’ captain David Miller praised his bowlers’ efforts: “Very delighted, nice to get over the line. We went with the spin, and it worked out perfectly.”
Despite the early setbacks, the Super Kings found some late resistance through Jonny Bairstow. The England international played a crucial innings, scoring an unbeaten 60 off 40 balls, while Donovan Ferreira contributed a quick 32 off 19 balls. Their partnership added 65 runs in the final five overs, giving the Super Kings a fighting total.
Steady Royals’ Run Chase
Chasing 147, the Royals’ top-order batsman Lhuan-dre Pretorius got them off to a flying start, scoring 27 off 14 balls. Though the Royals faced a minor setback with Hardus Viljoen (2/23) taking the wickets of Pretorius and Joe Root in quick succession, they remained in control.
David Miller once again played the finisher’s role to perfection. His partnership with Mitchell van Buuren (44 off 45 balls) added 71 runs for the fourth wicket, stabilizing the chase. Miller sealed the victory with a towering six off Lutho Sipamla, ensuring the Royals maintained their unbeaten record at Boland Park.
