The Melbourne Renegades, grappling with a wicketkeeping crisis in the final stretch of the Big Bash League (BBL) season, have set their sights on Netherlands captain Scott Edwards as a replacement for the injured Joe Clarke. Edwards, currently on a training tour with the Netherlands team in South Africa, has curtailed his trip to return to Melbourne, where he holds Australian citizenship.

With Quinton de Kock departing for SA20 post the Hobart Hurricanes match and Joe Clarke facing a season-ending injury, the Renegades find themselves without a local wicketkeeper. The team traded Sam Harper to the Melbourne Stars in a deal that brought legspinner Adam Zampa on board. English recruit Jordan Cox, intended as a replacement for de Kock, brings T20 wicketkeeping experience but has not donned the gloves in his last 26 matches.

In a surprising turn of events, Scott Edwards, aged 27, who qualifies as an Australian local, despite being fully available for BBL, was not signed by any team until now. Edwards, the Netherlands ODI and T20I captain, is set to make his BBL debut for the Renegades in the upcoming clashes against the Melbourne Stars on January 13 and the Sydney Thunder on January 17.

The Renegades, already dealing with upheavals in their squad, have further bolstered their ranks by adding West Indies left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein for the last two games after Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s No-Objection Certificate was revoked.

The season has been marked by captain Nic Maddinson dropping himself mid-season, and the notable absence of Aaron Finch in the most recent match despite his fitness. Finch has recently announced his retirement, opting to step away from the game despite having a year left on his contract. The Renegades, now with Edwards and Hosein in the mix, look to navigate the challenges and finish the season on a positive note.
