A lookback to Mohammad Siraj's IPL debut

The rise of star Indian pacer Mohammad Siraj to the top of his game has been nothing short of spectacular. Currently ranked second in the ICC Men’s ODI bowling rankings, Siraj’s formidable skills with the ball strike fear into even the best batters. However, like many exceptional players in world cricket, Siraj’s journey to stardom was paved through the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 29-year-old made his IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2017 season after being signed for a hefty INR 2.5 crore in the IPL auction. Recently, Siraj took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about his early days with Hyderabad ahead of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s clash against his former team in the IPL 2023 on Thursday, May 18.

Recalling his first memories with the team, Siraj shared an intriguing anecdote. “I was selected for the first time in 2017 for SRH, but I didn’t get a chance to play the opening matches. After six matches, Tom Moody called me and asked, ‘Where are you mate?’ I replied, ‘I am home.’ To my surprise, he said, ‘You are playing today.’ I didn’t know how to react at that moment. I immediately rushed back to the stadium and made my debut against the Delhi Capitals,” Siraj revealed in a video posted by Royal Challengers Bangalore on their YouTube channel.

Since his humble beginnings, Siraj has come a long way in the IPL. He has emerged as the spearhead of Bangalore’s pace attack, amassing an impressive tally of 16 wickets in 12 matches. Currently placed ninth in the race for the IPL Purple Cap, awarded to the tournament’s top wicket-taker, Siraj is determined to improve upon his performances and climb higher in the rankings.

Reflecting on his first game for Sunrisers Hyderabad, the champions of the 2016 season, Siraj shared the nerves and pressure he experienced. “It was my first time playing in front of a packed stadium. I was so nervous. The pressure was indescribable; my body felt heavy, and my legs seemed to bear the weight as I conceded three consecutive fours. But on the fourth ball, I took a crucial wicket, and that moment released the pressure,” Siraj admitted.

With his stellar performances in the IPL, Mohammad Siraj has proven himself to be a rising star in the cricketing world. His journey from an IPL debutant to a prominent figure in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s lineup is a testament to his hard work, determination, and unwavering focus. As the IPL 2023 continues, cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing more outstanding displays of skill from this exceptional talent.
