Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and all-rounder Josh Cobb have decided to part ways by mutual consent, bringing an end to Cobb’s association with the club. Although Cobb played a crucial role in securing the T20 Blast title in 2016, his recent disappointment stems from the abrupt removal of his captaincy in 2023.

Expressing his shock and disappointment on social media at the time, Cobb revealed that he was blindsided by the decision to name David Willey as captain just two weeks before the T20 Blast tournament. The unexpected leadership change left Cobb disheartened, as he felt removed from the role without prior consultation.

With one year left on his contract, Cobb and Northamptonshire have agreed to part ways, allowing the all-rounder to explore cricketing opportunities elsewhere. The 2023 season proved challenging for Cobb, managing only 76 runs in seven innings. However, he leaves a lasting legacy at Northamptonshire, notably contributing to their T20 Blast triumph in 2016.

“Cobb has left the club by mutual agreement ahead of the final year of his existing contract, allowing him to pursue cricketing opportunities elsewhere,” Northamptonshire said in a club statement.

Cobb, who joined Northamptonshire ahead of the 2015 season, departs as the second-leading run-scorer for the club, amassing 2449 runs from 95 games. Reflecting on his time with Northamptonshire, Cobb expressed gratitude and fondness for the support he received from the club, staff, teammates, and fans. Despite the recent setbacks, Cobb cherishes the memories, particularly the T20 Blast victory in 2016, and hopes the club can return to its glory days in the future.

“I have loved my time at the club,” Cobb said. “Winning the T20 Blast in 2016 is one of the highlights of my career so far and I hope the club can return to those glory days in the future. I’d like to thank the club, staff, my teammates and of course the fans for all their support over the years.”

As Cobb embarks on a new chapter in his cricketing journey, Northamptonshire acknowledges his contributions and wishes him well in his future endeavors. The departure marks the end of an era for both the player and the club, with memories of success and challenges shaping their shared history.
